Vitellaria nilotica is the East African subspecies of the shea tree — a botanically distinct variety that grows wild in the Nile basin parklands of Uganda and South Sudan. It is one of two recognized subspecies of Vitellaria, the other being Vitellaria paradoxa (West African shea).

The INCI name for the butter derived from this tree is Vitellaria nilotica seed butter. In trade, it is commonly called Nilotica shea butter or East African shea butter. It is chemically and physically different from West African shea — not a premium grade, but a genuinely distinct ingredient.

The correct INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) name is Vitellaria nilotica seed butter. This designation is distinct from the West African shea INCI name, which is Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter.

The differences are chemical, physical, and geographic — not merely qualitative grading.

Chemical: Nilotica has a significantly higher oleic acid content (50–70% vs. 40–55% in West African varieties). Oleic acid drives skin absorption, emolliency, and the soft texture formulators want. Nilotica also has higher unsaponifiable matter — the bioactive fraction containing phytosterols, tocopherols, and vitamins A, E, and F.

Physical: Nilotica melts at 23–27°C — at body temperature, with no friction required. West African shea melts at 35–42°C. Nilotica has no graininess on skin, a milder aroma, and a faster, lighter absorption profile.

Geographic: Nilotica is geographically exclusive to the Nile basin — Uganda and South Sudan. It represents approximately 1% of global shea exports and cannot be sourced elsewhere.

Looking more broadly across East African suppliers, a January 2026 CBI market report on nilotica shea butter cites an industry-wide range of 47–67% oleic acid, compared to 40–50% for West African Vitellaria paradoxa. Nilotica consistently runs higher in oleic acid and lower in stearic acid than West African shea, giving it a softer, more easily absorbed texture.

All Vitellaria nilotica seed butter exported by Atunile Organics is wild-harvested from cooperative networks across Northern Uganda's Nile basin parklands.

Harvesting is conducted by women-led cooperatives using traditional nut collection methods during the natural fruiting season. All harvest zones are GPS-mapped and satellite-documented for EUDR traceability purposes.

The natural range of Vitellaria nilotica is ecologically and geographically constrained to the Nile basin — the specific combination of altitude (600–1,200m), rainfall pattern, soil composition, and transitional woodland-savannah mosaic found in Northern Uganda and parts of South Sudan.

The species cannot be meaningfully transplanted or cultivated outside this range at commercial scale. Trees take 10–15 years to reach fruit-bearing maturity. Uganda holds the world's commercially significant Nilotica supply, and Atunile Organics is a verified exporter from within that range.
